MUTATION 1 (2020–2021)

PLA, 3D print, dimensions variable

Grey Archives, 1st Yanjiao Art Biennial, Beijing

Mutations is a series of 3D-printed objects, digital animations, and graphic works that examine the speculative concept of biological transformation in the post–COVID-19 era. The project reflects on how viral contagion, as both a biological and cultural phenomenon, redefines the relationship between humanity, nature, and technology.

Within this framework, organic and human anatomies merge to form hybrid entities that challenge conventional distinctions between species. Floral structures acquire anthropomorphic characteristics: feet emerge from the centres of buds, while hands unfold from within petals, suggesting a reconfiguration of life at the molecular and symbolic levels.

Mutation 1 represents a fictional prehistoric Titan Arum whose genetic structure has been fused with human DNA, giving rise to a new speculative organism. Presented within the context of a modular hospital, the work evokes the intersection of scientific experimentation and clinical observation — a controlled environment in which unpredictable bio-digital mutations might arise.

Through this synthesis of technological fabrication and biological imagination, Mutations invites reflection on the shifting paradigms of evolution, adaptation, and the porous boundaries of the posthuman condition.
